Enfin, et peut-être ce qui est le plus dévastateur à long terme, est le refus de l’eau. Il fait très chaud dans la vallée du Jourdain, la plupart du temps. En été, les températures diurnes s’élèvent facilement au-dessus de 37°. Si des Palestiniens vivant dans des hameaux tels al-Hammeh ont l’audace d’essayer de se brancher sur les tuyaux de l’Autorité Palestinienne qui viennent de la ville de Tubbas en zone A, l’armée arrive et casse les tuyaux. Je les ai vus faire de mes propres yeux à al-Hadidiya en août dernier. Étant donné que la vie dans la vallée est intenable sans eau, les Palestiniens doivent acheter et importer de l’eau en citernes à des prix excessivement majorés. Rappelez-vous qu’il s’agit de pasteurs qui sont au minimum vital et pour lesquels le coût d’une seule citerne est une somme énorme, facilement la moitié des dépenses mensuelles d’une famille en été. Pour le dire simplement, l’idée est d’assécher les Bédouins jusqu’à ce que la soif les force à disparaître, peut-être en migrant quelque part en zone A ou même en dehors d’Israël-Palestine.

Asael, possibly the ugliest of all the illegal outposts in the southern West Bank—and the competition is fierce—is rapidly expanding. Yellow bulldozers, parked at the perimeter fence of the settlement, have carved out a huge swathe of intermeshed, criss-crossing gashes in the hill and valley just below. This wide, deep wound in the soil has been sliced, needless to say, through privately owned Palestinian land. We know the families. We’ve plowed here, on the edge of the outpost. There have been many bad moments with the Asael settlers, the ones we can see this Shabbat morning walking their dogs over the hill or praying to their rapacious god or swinging their children on the swings in the painted park just under their pre-fab caravans.

Israel’s Civil Administration confiscated last week a trailer that Palestinians had begun using as a clinic in Al-Markaz, a small village inside Masafer Yatta, a town which in turn finds itself within a southern West Bank military firing area called Firing Zone 918.

Two female activists from abroad and three from the Israeli-Palestinian group Ta'ayush were beaten in the South Hebron Hills.
"They threatened Danny: ‘We’ll tear you apart, get out of here.’ One encouraged the others the whole time to grab the cameras, and they started throwing stones at us − at first one or two, then pretty much all of them. There were between 15 and 20," he added.
